This project began with the idea of making models of our backyard chickens Pinky recently deceased , Brain, Rover and Dusty Purple Pearl yes my little one loves an epic name!

I began by cutting out the cardboard body shapes and lots of feathers for the kids to decorate. However as the project progressed and the chickens were given a very fancy and colourful paint job, my little one commented that they looked like the Roly Poly bird from the book The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dhal, so hence forth they have been called Roly Poly birds!

Cut chicken body shapes and lots of feathers from thick cardboard using a craft knife. For the legs, cut 2 tall semi-circle shapes from cardboard and cut a slot in the top of each the same width as your cardboard.

Once the paint had dried, we also added extra decoration and pattern using paint makers. To assemble your birds, glue on the feathers and slot the feet onto the bottom of the bird body.
