Yes, playback is there, but mostly it wants MPEG. If its all academic then - nevermind, go for it. I would think that when there are some more time spent on this you'll see some very impressive performance. Even without the RSX chip. Besides if you are worried about wasting electricity with the solution you'll have both your doing decoding AND your PC doing transcoding.

And no HD for you, as that'd be a bit hard for the host PC to transcode in real-time. And when they or someone else finishes that you can be sure it will be very nice. Basically, you can chose the blue pill or the red pill.

The Blue pill is nice if you want to play in Microsoft land and have all your content in WMV format or keep your PC from doing folding by transcoding instead. I've never used Transcode since I haven't upgraded to Vista yet, and I'm going to stick with x86 for a while because of annoyances like this, but from the betas last summer I remember bit codecs not working with bit players and vice-versa, so it might be something to do with that, or the same thing if the Windows Media encoding libraries are bit binaries?

Oh true enough, the G4 was sucking wind near the end there for a number of reasons. I have a old 12" PB Mhz myself I still use as the 'coffee table laptop' so I know exactly what you mean. But these codecs just weren't around when these machines weer current And that's slightly friendlier than H.
